Notes:

This is a lively lesson which introduces the phrases "What sports practise y'all play" and "I play ~".  During the lesson yous'll have a lot of fun playing different sports.

Lesson Process:

Warm Up and Maintenance:

Come across our "Warm Up & Wrap Upward" page.

New Learning and Practice:

1. Innovate and play sports
As the lesson is sports themed we are going to practise lots of fun sports activities. Make sure all of the desks and chairs are moved to the side of the classroom.

  • You'll need the following sports flashcards: soccer/football game, tennis, golf, basketball game, baseball, volleyball, rugby, badminton
  • Y'all'll also demand lots of review flashcards from previous lessons
  • Y'all'll demand the post-obit equipment: balloons, edible bean purse balls or pocket-sized soft assurance, a waste paper handbasket or a paper-thin box, a length of rope

Outset by dividing the class up into teams (for pocket-size classes make ii teams, for larger classes make up to 4 teams). Become each team to come up with a squad proper name then arm-twist the team names and write across the acme of the board (this will become the score board). During this office of the lesson students will compete in a number of sports and win points for their team.

  • Introduce and play sportsSoccer/Football: Outset, stick the soccer/football flashcard onto the lesser of the board and say "What sport is this?". Elicit "Soccer" or "Football game". So say, "I similar playing soccer (or football). Do y'all like playing soccer (or football game)?". Hopefully this will arm-twist some positive responses. And so stand up upwardly and say "Ok, let's play soccer (or football)!".

Go everybody to stand up and form a line, each student behind the other, one line per squad. At the other cease of the classroom brand a minor goal (apply two chairs or cushions for goal posts). Place a airship a few meters in front of the goal – far enough and then that when kicked makes information technology possible to score but not as well easy. Concord up a review flashcard – the start student in the first team has to say the vocab correctly to have a shot. If correct, let them sew and kick the airship. A goal earns a point (write on the score board). Play until at least each student has had a hazard to shoot. So go anybody to sit down and review the squad scores (we are not finished yet!).

  • Introduce and play sportsLawn tennis: Next, identify the tennis flashcard on the board and elicit information technology. This fourth dimension we are going to play "Head Tennis" with balloons. Pair up 2 students from opposing teams and accept them stand up facing each other. They then have to head the balloon between each other – the last player to caput the balloon wins (for younger students, patting the balloon is fine). The winner has to then respond a question to win a point for their team (e.g. What's your name? How old are you?, etc.). Play until everyone has had a get, then sit everyone downwardly and review the squad scores.
  • Golf: Same as to a higher place with eliciting the flashcard. This time we Introduce and play sports are going to play "Pencil Golf game". Put students in pairs from opposing teams and have them face up in the center of the classroom with a pencil each. Give each pair a small bean bag ball or soft ball. Players take turns to hit the ball towards the reverse wall – therefore each educatee will compete to hit the brawl in a different direction – yet, as they are simply using pencils the assurance won't travel far each hitting! Give a fourth dimension limit of 2 minutes. After 2 minutes, the pupil from each pair who is closest to his/her wall is the winner. Now, the winner will have to say the correct vocab for a review flashcard to win a point for their team. Then sit everyone downward and review the team scores.
  • Introduce and play sportsBasketball: Same equally in a higher place with eliciting the flashcard. This fourth dimension we are going to play "Shoot the Basket". Yous'll need a waste product paper handbasket or simply a cardboard box. As well, have a piece of paper and screw it up into a ball. Get everybody to stand up up and form a line, each student backside the other, one line per team. Put the basket at the other end of the classroom. Hold upwards a review flashcard – the first student in the first team has to say the vocab correctly to have a shot at the basket with the screwed upwards paper ball. If correct, let him/her take a shot. A successful shot earns a point (write on the score board). Play until at to the lowest degree each pupil has had a hazard to shoot. And then get everyone to sit downwards and review the squad scores.
  • Introduce and play sportsBaseball: Same as above with eliciting the flashcard. This time we are going to play "Balloon Baseball game". Have each team line up – anybody is a batter and the teacher is the pitcher. Stand up in forepart of the starting time student in the line and ask a question (e.g. Where practise you live?, What is your favorite food?, etc.). If the pupil answers correctly pat the balloon towards the educatee. Due south/he has to concur their hands together and swing and hit the airship (like a baseball swing). A successful hit wins a point. Any hit that bounces against a classroom wall wins an extra point for a home run! Play until at least each student has had a chance to bat. Then become everyone to sit down and review the squad scores.
  • Introduce and play sportsVolleyball: Same as in a higher place with eliciting the flashcard. This fourth dimension we are going to play "Balloon Volleyball". Put students in pairs from opposing teams and have them face up with a length of rope separating them (y'all can prevarication the rope right beyond the classroom and accept students stand either side as they play). Requite each pair a balloon. They pat the balloon to each other and try to stop it striking the flooring – whoever lets it drop loses a point. Allow everyone play for a few minutes, and so enquire who the winner of each game is. To win a point for their squad they must answer a review flashcard correctly. And so get anybody to sit downwardly and review the squad scores.
  • Introduce and play sportsRugby: Aforementioned as in a higher place with eliciting the flashcard. This fourth dimension we are going to play "Rugby Airship Pass". In rugby y'all have to laissez passer the ball backwards, so nosotros are going to play a game passing a balloon backwards. Get each team to line up, each student behind the other. Give the player at the forepart of each team'due south line a balloon. S/he must laissez passer the balloon backwards to his team-mate over the head. The adjacent player passes behind to his/her team-mate between the legs, and and so on, over the caput and between the legs. Each team must race against each other. The team that gets the airship to the last player wins a point. You tin play this game a few times. And so get anybody to sit and review the squad scores.
  • Introduce and play sportsBadminton: Same as above with eliciting the flashcard. This time we are going to play "Badminton Keep Ups". Put students in pairs from opposing teams. Requite each student a screwed upward paper ball. Each student has to compete confronting his/her partner to pat the ball up the most times before the ball hits the ground. Allow everyone about two minutes and then observe out who managed to keep the ball up the nearly from each pair. To win a point for their team they must answer a review flashcard correctly. Finally, get everyone to sit downward and tally the final scores to find out which team is the winner. The winning team will get a special prize at the end (run across point 7 beneath)!

2. Teach structures "What sports do you play?", "I play ~", "I don't play~"
You lot should now have 8 sports flashcards on the lath. Model the structures: indicate at the first card and say "I play soccer/football" – while nodding your head. So go to the side by side flashcard and say "I don't play tennis" shaking your head. Go through all the cards saying what you do and don't play.

Teach structures "What sports do you play?", "I play ~", "I don't play~"Now model with some students. Ask one student "What sports do you lot play?" and assist him/her go through the 8 sports saying what s/he does and doesn't play. Practise this with a couple more students so everyone gets the idea. Now in pairs, students enquire and reply the question. Alter pairs a few times until everyone has had plenty of practise.

iii. Sing "What Sports do you Play?"
Get everyone to stand up and sing along to the song whilst they do the gestures. Either use the flashcards on the lath to prompt the order of the sports in the song or use our vocal poster. Sing the song through a couple of times.

What Sports do you Play?"

4. Teach sports verbs and equipment vocab
On the board write: "To play soccer (or football game) you accept to __________ a soccer brawl (or football)". Arm-twist the missing verb and write "kick" in the blank.

Earlier class, cut out the words from the Sports vocab cut outs worksheet – enough for each group of students. In pairs, the students have to friction match the words (due east.g. golf – striking – golf game ball). As students are matching the words go around the class checking and request questions.

Do the "Let's Play Sports!" worksheet5. Exercise the "Let's Play Sports!" worksheet
This worksheet practices the vocab from the terminal point. Give each student a worksheet and circulate every bit everyone fills in the blanks.

6. Read classroom reader "Alien Sports"
This story will tie everything together - you can do talking about sports and sports equipment. Before class, download and print off the reader "Alien Sports". As you go through each page, point to the pictures and become each student to approximate what sport each alien is playing - also elicit the sports equipment, for case:

Read classroom reader "Alien Sports" Teacher: What sport practice y'all think he is playing?
Students: Tennis?
Teacher: Let's see (turns over folio) ... Yep, tennis! What is he hitting?
Students: A tennis brawl!
Teacher: I play (or don't play tennis). How about you lot Marta?
Student (Marta): I play tennis (or I don't play tennis).

Get the students really involved in the reader by asking lots of questions (e.g. eliciting colors, clothes, body features with adjectives (eastward.yard. the alien playing golf game has a big centre) and other objects) and getting them to guess each sport. Encourage everyone to say which sports they practice and don't play.

Afterwards reading the story, give out a reader worksheet to each student and read through the story ane more fourth dimension (without stopping for questions, etc.) every bit students lucifer upward the aliens to the sports. So go through the answers as a form.

---

Alternatively, picket our video version of the reader (Internet connection required):

vii. Special prize for the winning team
The winning team from the sports contest at the outset of the lesson can end the class by choosing one of the 8 sports for everyone to play again (no review flashcards necessary this fourth dimension!).

Special prize for the winning team
